For the most respected, published source on button terms, see the Encyclopedia of Buttons, by Sally Luscomb. For competition purposes, use the National Button Society's official Classification booklet.  This is published annually.  The current year's booklet applies to the following year's competition.  (For example, the 2008 Classification would be used when entering or judging 2009 awards.)

In English:  button. 
In French: bouton.  In Spanish: boton.  In Italian: bottone
In German: knopf.  In Danish: knap.  In Dutch:  dichtknopen
